Sustainability
Building Community is engineered for growth, and the curriculum is designed to be flexible and adaptable to a range of needs and populations. Each semester the program impacts approximately 150 high school students, and we replicate the program with more classes and at more schools, semester after semester. We also train other local artist-educators from Puerto Rico’s strong pool of educational theater talent in order to expand and sustain the program over the long term.
While community is at the heart of all Roots and Action programs, we continue to broaden our curriculum offerings to keep the program fresh and attentive to the needs of the various student populations on the island. Content areas include health, the environment, history and agriculture. Our interactions with students, teachers and administrators provide fertile ground for new research and ideas that will allow us to support more students in new ways well into the foreseeable future.
At some point we would also like to work with young Puerto Ricans who have moved to the U.S. mainland. Their issues may not be the same as those on the island, but many are facing difficult circumstances. They, too, need support to find strength in their identity, and to develop the tools to become strong, healthy and happy contributors to their families, their communities and society as a whole.
