Impact and Evaluation
We seek a positive and lasting impact on the attitudes, outlooks and skills of our students who we hope will become leaders and agents of change in their communities. To that end, assessment and evaluation are critical to the success of Roots and Action programs.
To evaluate Building Community, we have partnered with Cynthia García Coll, Ph.D., a professor at Brown University for 30 years, who moved back to her natal Puerto Rico seven years ago. Since then Dr. García Coll has been involved in research, teaching, publishing and evaluation both on the Island and on the U.S. mainland.
Initially, we propose to conduct a preliminary evaluation in order to refine the intervention and collect some pilot data that will suggest its effectiveness. Both phase one and two of the program will be evaluated.
This preliminary evaluation will have two components:
A pre- and post-intervention assessment of the attitudes and behaviors of the students who participate in the program, along with control groups. Key assessment areas include:
Attitudes and motivation toward civic engagement
Problem-solving skills
Written and verbal communication
Leadership skills
Teamwork
Academic skills
A post-treatment teacher evaluation of the program’s implementation and its impact on their students. Key assessment areas include:
Satisfaction with the program’s aims and its implementation
Assessment of the program’s impact on their students
All future implementations of the program will be evaluated, each time with hopefully larger sample sizes.
